I See the Beach, Where is the Ocean?

Sand, Sand, and More Sand

A portion of the sand berm located around the perimeter of the weapons range is depicted here.  The berms were construced by the Engineers and were so well-built that they would withstand the high winds that were common in Kuwait.  As is the case with most weapons ranges, the berms are constructed as a safety barrier to keep bullets from straying.  One of the responsibilities of the Liaison Team conducting the training at the weapons range was to check the territory outside the berms for stray camels or stray Beduins.  There was an opening in the berm to allow entrance to the range.  You can see the entrance in this picture.  Oftentimes camels would find their way onto the range through the soldiers entrance.  You can also see the bus bringing a unit of soldiers to the range for their turn to function check their weapon.  The range is to the right and ahead of the bus.  As you can see, the berms were as tall as the buses.  While waiting for their turn to function check their weapon, soldiers would chase around in the berms.
